Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. Plants are gathered annually for their rhizomes, which when not used fresh are boiled in water, dried, and ground into a deep-orange-yellow powder. Turmeric is commonly used as a coloring and flavoring agent in many Asian cuisines, especially for curries.
